Measuring your individual metabolism rate based on the amount of oxygen your body consume is a core component of the RedCircle® program. We will measure your metabolism rate to develop an individualized plan that fits your body and the amount of nutritional intake and additional metabolic consumption you will need to reach your goal.
Metabolism Assessment Test (MEDGEM® indirect calorimeter)
We measure your metabolism with MedGem; an FDA cleared state-of-the-art, handheld medical device to determine resting metabolism. The measurement is easy to administer and provides accurate results in 15 minutes.
The MEDGEM® technology works by measuring the oxygen consumption (VO2) of your body and calculating the resting metabolism, which is the number of calories the body burns to maintain essential functions such as heart rate, brain activity and breathing.
Resting metabolism, can represent up to 75% of the total metabolism in someone who leads a sedentary lifestyle, and is therefore an important factor in how efficiently calories will be burned off.
What is resting metabolism?
Resting metabolism is the amount of calories the body burns to maintain vital body functions such as maintaining a heart rate, brain function, and breathing. In simple terms, it is the number of calories a person would burn if they were awake, but at rest all day.
Why is measuring resting metabolism important?
Since resting metabolism accounts for up to 75% of the total calories we need each day, it’s critical to appropriately establish daily calorie needs, whether you’re trying to lose or maintain weight. It is important to know that metabolism is impacted by a variety of characteristics such as fever, illness, obesity, active weight loss, etc. When managing nutritional needs and calorie requirements, knowledge of resting metabolism is critically important. As a result of these estimates, individuals can be both over and under eating, and not be successful in reaching their personal goals. The most accurate assessment of caloric needs is by measuring oxygen consumption and determining individual metabolism.
Nutritional recommendation based on resting metabolism level
Based on the reading of your resting metabolism and other important factors, our dietician will recommend an allotted amount of calories for you to consume throughout each day. This balanced diet recommendation will include a measured and determined amount of protein, fat and carbohydrates. As you progress through our program, and as your body composition and resting metabolism changes, we will measure and reevaluate your overall nutritional intake level routinely to offer you the best and most accurate recommendations.
